Pro Perspectives: Part 1

 

I asked four professional basketball players the following question:

What advice would you give to young athletes who aspire to play at a high level one day?

Dijon Allen-Jordan

Team: Cheshire Phoenix (England, UK)

“A few tips that I can give young athletes to prepare for the higher levels of their sport is to remain humble and to always remember that people are watching your every move. How you carry yourself during and outside of play is very important. And always stay competitive because just like you, there is another athlete across the world who wants the same job.”

Ryan Cook

“Some advice I’d give to a young athlete would be to work hard at the things you are good at, and find your weaknesses and attempt to eliminate them. For one, people will realize the things that you are good at if you do them often and secondly, if you kill your weaknesses you are intangible to your team(s).”

Danaejah Grant

Team: Edremit Gürespor (Edremit, Turkey)

“The advice that I would give to young athletes who want to play at a high level is to leave every single piece of effort and heart out on the court. Every time you lace up those sneakers to play, you never know who’s in the stands watching you. Also, work on your handle every single day, regardless of if you are a center or a power forward. Once you are comfortable with your ability to control the basketball, there is no one who will stand in front of you.

Most importantly, you have to be coachable. Always display how willing you are to learn new things and be a team player who wants to win. Body language is most important to coaches, especially on the college level! Coaches want players who compliment the culture of their programs. Always keep a positive attitude!”

Tyrone Johnson

Team: Sosúa Sharks (Dominican Republic)

“The advice that I would give young athletes who want to play at a high level one day is, number one: stay in school and get an education; Two: you have to live in the gym. Be willing to make sacrifices and work on your game, even after practice. And take care of your body. The work you put in is what you get out.”
